Discover Wengen

Wengen is located in the heart of the Jungfrau Region 1274m above sea level. It is a car-free mountain village surrounded by incredible scenery. Lovers of the history of Alpine climbing will recognise the celebrated trio of mountains that crown the majesty of the Bernese Oberland, the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau. Skiers will be familiar with the infamous 'Lauberhorn Run', the longest downhill world cup ski race of them all, which takes place here every year in January.

This area is the cradle of mountaineering and winter sports. Part of its charm is that around every corner there are reminders that this is where it all began. The cog railway that goes through the village continues up to the Jungfraujoch, 'The Top of Europe' and has been taking visitors there since 1912. Some of these visitors realised that this railway could also take them up the mountain with their skis - and so began the craze for Down Hill Only skiing. In other places you had to carry your skis up with you before commencing your descent. Wengen was very proud of their superiority and the 'uphill transport' continues to be of excellent quality for skiers and walkers alike.

Whilst the area is a wonderful ski resort, with over 213km of ski slopes, 44 lifts and some amazing off piste skiing, remember that this is not a high-rise, purpose built resort. Wengen, Mürren and Grindelwald were mountain communities long before the tourists arrived and the buildings and traditions that go back to those days are still very strong.

Wengen is not just a winter resort. The first visitors came in the summer for health reasons and the wonderful, pure mountain air. Today guests still enjoy walks through flower-filled mountain pastures, the cows and the goats with their bells ringing, the notes of an Alphorn drifting up from the valley and the traditional folklore evenings.

There are beautiful hikes that start right outside each of our chalets, and in the apartments you will find maps and details of different attractions and events. There are just so many things to do. Paragliding, climbs with fixed ropes (Via Ferrata), mountain biking, swimming, canoeing, the list is endless. In September the Jungfrau Marathon comes through Wengen as two thousand or more weary runners make their way up from Interlaken to the finish line, near the glacier on the Eiger!

It is easily understandable why UNESCO protects this wonderful area as a World Heritage site – it is recognised as one of the most beautiful places on the earth.
